Welcome to Command Line Mac. A compendium of useful tips and tricks for the Apple Macintosh command prompt, (also known as the shell), where the real computing happens.
When OS X was first released, the default shell was the C shell. Recently, Apple wisely changed the default shell to the Bourne Again shell (bash). Unless otherwise noted, "the shell" means the bash shell.
A couple of words about your humble host...
I do Linux by day, with an emphasis on web programming and system administration. By night, I do Mac (and more Linux). I founded LinuxBoxAdmin.com, (but sold it in early 2007) and have written technical articles for NewsForge.com and Linux.com. What attracted me to the modern Mac was the underlying BSD core, the eye candy, and peripherals that "just work".
There is great synergy between command line thingies on Mac and Linux, but there are also some key differences. The differences stand out for me because of my Linux-tinted glasses and I'll try to note them if relevant.
I expect most original content will focus on the shell, but I will probably drift into GUI land from time to time. To kick start the site, I brought over a few of my Mac-related articles from LinuxBoxAdmin, but only because they are relevant.
News vs. Tips
I created two general categories of stories. News articles are intended to be more in depth and focused, with more explanation. News articles also delve into more advanced or off beat topics. Tips are meant to be quick reference sheets for common tasks. Many Tips will cover BASH syntax or utility usage.

I will leave unrestricted comments enabled for as long as possible. I don't have high expectations of keeping comment spam under control. If it gets too bad, I'll have to either disable comments or moderate them.
